What Is PU Material? A polyurethane material, or PU material for short, is a type of versatile plastic. The three types of PU materials are flexible foams, rigid foams and elasto-plastics. These materials are most often used in building construction, the automotive industry and in furniture manufacturing.

The main advantages that people see with PU leather are lower cost, ease of maintenance, and the ability to have the leather look and feel of various types of animals. The biggest downside of PU leather is that it won't last as long as real leather, because it is not made from natural animal hide.

The main difference you will find is the cost. PU leather will generally be cheaper than genuine leather because it is easier to produce. PU leather will have a distinct smell to it. PU will have a plastic or chemical smell to it that genuine leather will not have. Doing a water test is also an easy way to determine if it is real or fake leather.

Polyurethane is a polymer, or synthetic resin. PU is desirable because of its strength, durability, water resistance, and because it generally dries as a transparent, taking on whatever color it is dipped in or whatever it’s brushed on. It also tends to be scratch-resistant.
